In short

Prateek® Nitrile Foam Tape is a nitrile-based foam tape used as a thermal interface material inside EV battery packs. Its job is to sit in the gap between a heat source and a heat path and make that contact consistent: it helps transfer heat away from battery cells and ensures consistent thermal connections within the battery pack. A foam interface matters because two nominally flat surfaces never touch completely, and the air trapped between them is a poor conductor; a compressible foam layer fills those gaps so heat has somewhere to go. Battery pack builders use it where cells, cooling plates and casings meet and where a compliant layer is preferred to a rigid one. Prateek® Nitrile Foam Tape is manufactured by Lalit Jain Industries Pvt. Ltd. (LJIPL), an ISO 9001:2015 certified tape manufacturer founded in 1987, at its units in Rai, Sonipat (Haryana) and Bawana, Delhi NCR, India.

What is a thermal interface material and where does nitrile foam fit?

A thermal interface material, or TIM, is anything placed deliberately between a component that makes heat and the structure meant to carry that heat away. Without it, the two surfaces touch only at high points and the rest of the joint is air, which insulates.

Prateek® Nitrile Foam Tape is used as a thermal interface material in battery packs. It helps transfer heat away from battery cells and ensures consistent thermal connections within the battery pack, the word to notice is consistent, because uneven contact means uneven cell temperatures across a module.

Where a higher and specified thermal conductivity is required, pack designers move to our Mr.Bond® thermal pads, which are UL 94V0 approved and available from 1 W/m·K to 8 W/m·K. The complete group range is at Prateek® Tapes.

Why use a foam tape rather than a rigid material?

Battery assemblies move. Cells expand and contract as they charge and discharge, tolerances stack up across a module, and the pack is subject to vibration in service. A rigid interface cannot absorb any of that; a foam one can.

Nitrile foam is compressible, so it takes up variation between parts and keeps contact under compression instead of breaking it. That is the mechanism behind the claim that it ensures consistent thermal connections within the battery pack.

It is supplied in tape form, so it is applied as part of normal assembly rather than dispensed or cured.

How do I specify nitrile foam tape for my pack?

Send the gap you need to fill, the footprint of the part, and where in the pack the material sits. Those three things drive the specification more than anything else.

If your requirement is a stated thermal conductivity figure rather than a compliant gap filler, say so in the enquiry, the thermal pad range is specified by conductivity and is customised per specification, while this foam tape is specified as a thermal interface material for cell-to-structure contact. Share your requirement and the technical team will confirm what suits.

What to measure before specifying a thermal layer is covered on the thermal interface materials page, and the EV battery tapes hub shows where this tape sits among the other pack materials.

Where it is used

Typical applications

Battery pack assembly

Thermal interface between cells and structure

Used as a thermal interface material where cells meet the surrounding structure, it helps transfer heat away from battery cells. The foam compresses into the joint so heat has a continuous path instead of crossing an air gap that insulates.

EV module build

Keeping thermal contact consistent across a module

Cell temperatures across a module should track each other. A compressible nitrile foam interface ensures consistent thermal connections within the battery pack, absorbing tolerance variation between parts so one cell is not left with a worse thermal path than its neighbours.

E-mobility manufacturing

A compliant layer that tolerates movement

Cells expand and contract during charging and discharging and packs see vibration in service. Foam accommodates that movement while staying in contact, which is why a foam-based thermal interface is chosen over a rigid one in this part of the assembly.

Buyer questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Prateek® Nitrile Foam Tape used for?

It is used as a thermal interface material in EV battery packs. It helps transfer heat away from battery cells and ensures consistent thermal connections within the battery pack, sitting between the cells and the surrounding structure so heat has a continuous path rather than crossing an insulating air gap.

What is a thermal interface material?

A thermal interface material is a layer placed between a heat-producing component and the structure that carries heat away. Two surfaces pressed together only touch at high points, and the trapped air between them conducts poorly. A compressible interface fills those gaps so the joint conducts heat consistently across its whole area.

Why is nitrile foam used instead of a rigid material?

Because the assembly moves. Cells expand and contract during charging and discharging, part tolerances vary, and packs vibrate in service. Foam compresses to take up that variation and stays in contact, which is what allows it to ensure consistent thermal connections within the battery pack.

How is nitrile foam tape different from a thermal pad?

Nitrile foam tape is specified as a thermal interface material for cell-to-structure contact. Mr.Bond® thermal pads are specified by thermal conductivity, offered from 1 W/m·K to 8 W/m·K per specification and UL 94V0 approved. If your drawing calls out a conductivity figure, the thermal pad range is the one to discuss.

Is this tape supplied under the Prateek® brand?

Yes. It is branded Prateek®, one of the four brands of Lalit Jain Industries Pvt. Ltd. alongside Mr.Bond®, LKJ® and the LJIPL parent range. The Prateek® Tapes site covers the rest of that brand portfolio, including the PTK® double-sided tissue tape grades.

Who manufactures Prateek® Nitrile Foam Tape?

Lalit Jain Industries Pvt. Ltd. (LJIPL), founded in 1987 and ISO 9001:2015 certified, manufactures it in India. The company runs two units, at Rai, Sonipat in Haryana and Bawana in Delhi, and is led by directors Mr. Prateek Jain and Mr. Shikhar Jain.
